McDonalds is the Largest Toy Distribution Company

When we talk about McDonalds is the Largest Toy Distribution Company there is so much more behind that, and its so worth documentation and putting into a Digital Article. We may not realize the impact this has had on all of us, though when the Christmas “Grinch” Meal with Socks came out, we all rushed to get them and made it sell out faster than they could ever anticipate. Commercials still were paid and running while supplies were already gone. And this is not just a one time example.

McDonalds is the Largest Toy Distribution Company

We love experiences and care about how we feel. Emotions drive us. Frankly, without emotions we do not get out of Bed. And while Emotions are something we all work to keep in check, they keep us human and keep us on a path of learning, experiencing and so much more. Well, when we were small kids we were most likely exposed to McDonalds and their famous (World-Wide) Happy Meals. Choices of Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Chicken Nuggets, Fries or Apples, Chocolate Milk, Milk, Apple Juice or Soda, and the main thing we cared about was the Toy that came with it. Whether it was a latest Movie Release Toy or a Cartoon Toy or Hot Wheels Car or Barbie. The List of Toys is so vast, and remember McDonalds is the Largest Toy Distribution Company in the World.

Even the Name “Happy Meal” is absolutely tied to McDonalds, a Toy, food (secondary concern) and a drink. Watch any kid, (any age of Kid) and when they get their Happy Meal, the Toy is the First Thing they go to. What did they get, and then the food comes into play. In many cases the Toy was the real desire, and the reason for wanting McDonalds to begin with.

The Reason is Emotions! We are connected to Happy and Happiness when it comes to the Golden Arches, the Happy Meal, the Toy and Emotions from it. And it is connected from the first time we experienced it and ongoing. And the moment we re-experiences it, those emotions flood to us and connect to our Human Minds. This is why a silly set of socks and Grinch Theme will drive us to rush and get “all four pairs” if we can. The food is never the concern, its about the Emotions and the Tangible “Toy or Prop” that is connected with the Emotion. And it leads back to all of our Experiences from the first to our latest.

McDonalds Toys

This is why they are the largest toy distribution company in the World. And they are brilliant in their Marketing Partnerships. With Movies, with Cartoons, with Characters, with Toy Companies. Endless Marketing Wins for the attention and Love of Consumers.

Ever Ask 5 to 11 year old kids if they Want a Happy Meal? They know exactly where and what that is and means. And they may already be aware of what Toys they are featuring at the time. Or they may just know that whatever Boy or Girl Toy, its going to be a fun experience. It will be greeted with Smiles and Excitement.

You can even get them excited about it days in a row! It makes a road trip a fun trip. It makes winning a Soccer Game or going on Errands tied to Emotional Highs. And there is always Sweet Treats (Ice Cream) and Sugar Rush’s connected. As they eat their food and drink their drinks, that Toy is now something they have a physical and tangible documentation of the Emotional Addition to their “Feelings with McDonalds and those Golden Arches”. It is more powerful than we realize really.

As we age, Teenagers go into the Value Meals, and the Toys fade away. Only to be repeated when we have children of our own. Or Nieces, Nephews, or Friends with Kids and we relive the Cycle of Emotions through them, with them. And this is why you will see Grandparents so “About It”. More so then they probably did with their own Children. There is a Joy that is realized and remembered. And the more you did it, the larger the Emotional Impact. This is a reality.

And so when a Rare Adult Moment is Released, in the form of Goofy Grinch Socks, our feelings and emotions take over and we Rush to a Fast Food Restaurant to feed our Serotonin Levels. We know it is silly, but it is great Value for the Emotional Connection that is built from the time we were young and forever. Pretty amazing, and Marketing Genius. Now let’s get into the Facts of How BIG this is in Toy Distribution.

They are the Largest in the World. And we will break it down. In case my references above did not give you the full picture of how powerful this is to the Global Emotions of us all, this should shed light. It is Massive, and Powerful.

They usually partner with major brands such as:

  • Disney
  • Marvel
  • Pokémon
  • Hot Wheels
  • Barbie
  • (Anyone that Wants Big Exposure is Knocking on their Door all the Time) Such as ANY Kids Movie Release. And remember DISNEY is part of a Huge Network. They are absolutely doing whatever is necessary to keep this relationship solid.

These promotions turn Happy Meals into successful and “insane in my opinion” collectible marketing campaigns. This continues to drive families to visit McDonald’s during the promotion period, and with a ASAP and Scarcity Mentality. (Reference Article: Wikipedia)

Lets’ begin with “The toy is not just a toy”. This is so much more.

It is a effective (by all measures) customer-acquisition tool:

  • Parents go because kids want the toy and have been seeing it on Ads everywhere.
  • Kids build brand loyalty early and get “Mentally Fixated” on “Happiness is McDonalds”.
  • Movie studios promote films and get Exposure (unlike anything else).
  • McDonald’s sells more meals (Because the Toys are Connected to the Meals).

It’s one of the most successful cross-marketing strategies in business history.

In 1997, McDonald’s partnered with Ty Inc. to release miniature Beanie Babies which are called “Teenie Beanies.” Smaller versions of their small stuffed animals already.

The result was one of the largest toy promotions in fast-food history. It became so in demand, that people were buying far more food by the numbers to get these gems.

What Happened

  • McDonald’s released 10 collectible toys in Happy Meals. 10.
  • Each toy was only available for a short time window. Scarcity at best.
  • Collectors wanted the complete set. And people knew it. And it created such a frenzy and secondary Market for the missing ones from peoples Sets.

The Impact

  • Restaurants across the U.S. experienced massive lines. And non-stop.
  • Some locations ran out of toys in hours. It was a frenzy.
  • Customers were buying multiple Happy Meals just for the toys. And it stressed supply chain. The boxes even were being ran out. People didn’t care. They wanted the Toy. Period. Food was absolutely an after-thought. I witnessed it personally and saw people just abandon the food.

During the promotion:

  • McDonald’s reportedly sold over 100 million Happy Meals in about 5 weeks. And I know they would have sold even more if they produced more Toys. The Demand was way above the Supply. Awesome.
  • Many locations saw sales increases estimated around 20–30% during the promotion period. And that is a huge occurrence.

This was extraordinary because McDonald’s was already the largest fast-food chain in the world at the time. And this had of have had impact on the Competition. Want to go eat, want another “Teenie Beanie”, of course.

The craze became so intense that:

  • eBay listings for Teenie Beanies exploded. And for insane amounts. These were not discounted, and the pricing was explosive. I know. We made a mint with Beanie Babies in General.
  • Some collectors believed the toys would become high-value collectibles. This is probably an overstated assumption by many, but the frenzy was real. So real.
  • Certain restaurants had to limit how many toys customers could buy. And there were fights that would break out over the last toys within a restaurant. It was a craze for sure.

The promotion used three powerful psychological triggers:

1️⃣ Scarcity: This drives the Consumers to Act Fast and with full Impulse. Caution is forgotten.

Limited availability made people rush to get them.

2️⃣ Collectibility: A Promise (self made) that it will be an Investment. Usually allowing more Caution to be thrown away in the process.

People wanted all 10 toys, not just one. The need to complete the collection was Mad. People have a market driven belief that the value is more with having all 10, with Perfectly Protected Tags. Don’t forget that part.

3️⃣ Emotional Marketing: Beanie Babies were already a cultural craze in the 1990s. They were known, loved. And the miniature versions were only sought after harder. Incredible.

The company realized something extremely valuable: A small toy can drive billions of dollars in food sales. And at a cost of just a few cents to manufacture; the increase in business and traffic was incredible.

Even today McDonald’s continues to partner with Major brands like:

McDonalds Toys
  • The Walt Disney Company
  • Pokémon
  • Hot Wheels
  • Barbie

These powerful and popular collaborations keep Happy Meals as the most or one of the most powerful marketing tools in the restaurant industry.
