  • As Entrepreneurs we read and learned this Story and it only reflected on the very things we Understand. And it is the American Dream, and it so puts into a perspective of the Grit, the Sacrifice by our Ancestors to allow us to be able to have what we have today.
  • It is all about Grit and Sticking through it. Some do not see the Vision of what they are creating and building, and they lose out. Others are so Set on the Success they know they Diserve they Stick with it.
  • And as we worked on sharing this Origination Story of Domino’s Pizza it reminded us of what we already believe and know. And that is, those who Stick Around Get Paid!

Two brothers, Tom and James Monagham together purchased a small pizza restaurant called DomiNick’s in Ypsilanti, Michigan. And they purchased it with 1960 Money for about $900. In 1960, brothers Tom Monaghan and James Monaghan purchased a small pizza restaurant called DomiNick’s in Ypsilanti, Michigan, for about $900. Which would be $10,190 today (2026 dollars). To put it into perspective.

They were not wealthy, and they made a small down payment, and financed the rest of the purchase. Tom was in college, and was working hard to make ends meet. And then things changed.

About eight months into the purchase (down payment and financed payments going on) James decided he wanted out of the Pizza Business. He worked out an exit from the Business for a used Volkswagen Beetle from Tom. This now made Tom the Sole Owner of the Pizza Restaurant.

After just a Few Years, Tom decides he wants to expand. He wants to open additional stores. And this came with a Name Issue. Mainly that the original owner would not allow Tom to continue using the name DomiNick’s for multiple locations.

And as the Story Goes, an Employee suggested the name of “Domino’s”, Tom Like it Immediately and in 1965 the Company Officially become Domino’s Pizza.

The Origination Story of Domino's Pizza

Now the Logo of the Domino with 3 Dots, 2 Blue and 1 Red represented one for each of the three Domino’s Stores. And the idea was to add a Dot to the Logo for each Store that was added. So fourth Store would be 4 Dots, and so on. However, this was going to be undone as the plan because things were about to go faster than expected.

Domino’s expanded so rapidly that this idea for the Logo to Grow by one Dot per added Store was impractical, and today would be so many thousands of dots it would not have worked. The simplicity of the three dots is World Known and has served the Domino’s Brand greatly.

Domino's Pizza

Tom realized something important:

People loved pizza, but they especially loved having pizza delivered quickly.

Instead of trying to compete as a traditional restaurant, Domino’s focused heavily on delivery.

This became the foundation of its success.

By the 1970s and 1980s, Domino’s had become known for fast delivery and convenient ordering.

The Famous 30-Minute Guarantee

One of the most famous marketing campaigns in restaurant history was Domino’s:

“Delivered in 30 minutes or less.”

The guarantee helped Domino’s become a household name throughout North America.

Although the guarantee was eventually discontinued, it played a huge role in building the brand.

Near Bankruptcy to Billion-Dollar Success

Tom Monaghan faced significant financial struggles while expanding.

At one point, he was heavily in debt and risked losing everything.

But he continued growing the business, franchising stores across the country.

Eventually Domino’s became one of the largest pizza chains in the world.

Tom Monaghan’s Personal Story

Tom Monaghan grew up in an orphanage after his father died when he was very young.

He often credits hard work, perseverance, and faith for helping him overcome difficult circumstances.

His journey from orphanage resident to billionaire entrepreneur is one of the most remarkable business stories in America.

Domino’s Today

Today, Domino’s Pizza operates in thousands of locations across more than 90 countries and is one of the world’s largest pizza brands.

What started as a single small pizza shop in Michigan became a global company serving millions of customers every week.

🍕 One Trivia Fact Most Fans Don’t Know

The Volkswagen Beetle that James Monaghan accepted for his share of the company became one of the most expensive cars in history in hindsight.

Had he kept his ownership stake, it would eventually have been worth billions of dollars. That’s quite a trade for a used VW! 🚗💰🍕
